Diagnose the cause of IWB holster chafing, shifting, and digging, then apply targeted fixes for cant, ride height, and belt tension. Know when to stop adjusting and choose a different holster.

Quick answer

Most IWB comfort problems come from three adjustable variables: cant, ride height, and belt tension. Fix those before you blame the holster. If discomfort persists after correct adjustment, the holster's shape or material is likely wrong for your body and carry position.

Why cant and ride height matter more than padding

Cant is the angle of the holster relative to your belt line; ride height is how deep the gun sits below the waistband. A neutral cant (straight drop) works for appendix carry, while a forward cant (15–20 degrees) helps hip carry by keeping the grip from printing when you bend. Ride height changes where the holster's mouth and hardware press against your body. Adjusting these two settings often eliminates chafing and digging without adding a pad.

Belt tension is the third variable. Too loose, and the holster shifts with every step, causing hot spots. Too tight, and the holster presses into your hip or pelvis. A stiff gun belt should hold the holster in place with only moderate tension.

When the problem is the holster, not the adjustment

Some discomfort cannot be adjusted away. A holster cut for a different body type, a material that does not conform to your hip contour, or a design that places hard edges against the thigh will keep causing problems no matter how you set cant or ride height. If you have tried at least three cant and ride-height combinations with correct belt tension and still get chafing or pressure points, stop adjusting and consider a different holster.

Also check that your holster is actually designed for your specific firearm model. A loose fit allows the gun to shift inside the holster, which feels like holster movement but is really a retention problem.

Comfort problem diagnosis

  • Chafing or rubbing at the holster mouth: Likely cause: ride height too low or cant angle forcing the mouth into your skin. Corrective action: raise the holster one setting and try a 15-degree forward cant. Stop when the mouth clears your hip crease without exposing the grip. If chafing continues after two ride-height changes, the holster shape may not match your body.
  • Holster shifts or rotates during movement: Likely cause: belt tension too loose or a belt that lacks stiffness. Corrective action: tighten the belt one notch and confirm the holster clips or loops are engaged. Stop when the holster stays put during a walk test. A dedicated gun belt often solves shifting better than a tighter holster.
  • Pressure or digging at the hip or thigh: Likely cause: cant angle pointing the holster's bottom edge into your leg. Corrective action: reduce forward cant to neutral or try a slight reverse cant. Stop when the bottom edge lies flat against your leg. If pressure remains at any cant angle, the holster length or curve is wrong for your torso.
  • Gun feels loose inside the holster: Likely cause: holster not matched to your exact firearm model. Corrective action: verify the holster is specified for your model; do not shim or pad a loose fit. Stop and choose a holster made for your firearm. Retention problems are a safety issue, not a comfort adjustment.
